Search Tips

To find information about a topic, simply type in a few keywords (i.e. "evidenced-based medicine", "territory conflict", etc.). The more detailed your query, the more relevant your results.

The search engine allows for boolean expressions, which means that additional criteria can be selected from the options provided or added to your query in the search field itself to further refine your results.

For example, using the AND connector ("and" or "+") between keywords will retrieve only those documents matching all the keywords provided, while using the OR connector ("or" or comma) will find pages with only one or some of the keywords. So, a search for "patient+pictures" will find pages containing both keywords and a search for "patient, pictures" will find pages that include one or the other.

The NOT connector ("not" or "-") finds documents matching one keyword (or a set of keywords) minus another keyword (or set of keywords). A search for "patient pictures NOT physicians", for example, would find only the phrase "patient pictures".

Asterisks may also be used to broaden a search. While they are a powerful search tool, they do have a few limitations. For example, the asterisk cannot span words, so the query "spa*ords" would not match this sentence.

An asterisk can represent AT MOST four letters or numbers. Also, to avoid overly broad searches, it can be used only in words or phrases which have at least three alpha-numeric characters, meaning that a search for "th*" would be ignored.

Note on case sensitivity: Only words or phrases containing an uppercase character will be treated as case-sensitive. For example, a search for "usa" will match the terms "Usa", "USA", and "usA", while a search for "USA" will find only the uppercase version.
